Open Enrollment is the time to review your health plan and make changes, if you want to. 2017 Open Enrollment ran from Novermber 1, 2016 through January 31, 2017. If you lose health coverage or have another qualifying event, you can still sign up but need to act fast. If you wait more than 60 days to apply and select your plan, you might have to wait until 2018 to get health insurance.
Stay Covered in 2017
For your convenience, your Vermont Health Connect plan would have been automatically renewed for 2017 unless you heard from us that additional information was needed. As a renewing customer, as long as you pay your bill, your 2017 coverage will be effective January 1st, 2017.
You should call the Customer Support Center or log into your account by December 15 (for January 1 effective date) if:
You need to report a change in your income or household members
You want to pick a different health insurance plan for the remainder of 2017
If you’re happy with your current plan and don’t have any changes to report, you do not need to contact us.
Medicaid & Dr. Dynasaur Plan Renewal
Medicaid enrollment and renewals happen throughout the year, not just during Open Enrollment. If you have a Medicaid or Dr. Dynasaur plan, you will receive a letter when it is time for you to renew. If you have questions, call Green Mountain Care directly at 1-800-250-8427 (toll-free).
Changing Your Health Plan
Open enrollment is the time of year when you can make changes to your Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont or MVP Healthcare insurance coverage. The new plan year begins January 1, 2017. If you want to change plans, you should call the Customer Support Center or log into your account. Whether the new plan takes effect in January, February, or March depends on the date you make your request, so please let us know by January 15 if you want your new plan to start in February. If you don’t contact us and confirm a plan choice by January 31, 2017, you likely won’t be able to change plans until 2018.
Health insurance can be complicated, but help is available. Use the steps and resources below as a guide to help you select the plan that best meets your needs and budget.
Get familiar with health insurance lingo and learn the terms to better understand how health insurance can work for you.
Find out what financial help you qualify for and see estimates of the total costs of each plan choice. Most Vermonters can either get free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid or Dr. Dynasaur, or get help to lower their monthly premium and out-of-pocket costs. It’s important to remember that you must purchase a silver-level plan on Vermont Health Connect to take advantage of cost-sharing reductions to lower your out-of-pocket costs, if you qualify.
If you have questions about free preventive care, provider networks, or covered prescriptions, you can find helpful links from our Health Plans page or speak to a representative from a health insurance carrier. If you'd like to talk through health insurance terms or information in person, you can meet with a trained, certified in-person Assister near you.
If you decide to change to a different health insurance plan for 2017, call Vermont Health Connect at 1-855-899-9600 (toll-free) to let us know or log into your account. You can change your plan until the end of the Open Enrollment Period, which is January 31, 2017. Whether the new plan takes effect in January, February, or March depends on the date you make your request. Please select your plan by December 15 if you want it to start in January.
If you have insurance through Vermont Health Connect and have had changes in your family or income, we need to know. A change such as a wedding, a birth, a raise, or a new job could change your coverage or the amount of financial help you qualify for. Learn more about reporting a change.
Most Americans who do not have health insurance will have to pay the Shared Responsibility Payment when they file their federal taxes.
