About Vermont Health Connect
Vermont has been a leader in healthcare reform for many years. In 1989, we created Dr. Dynasaur, which is Vermont’s Medicaid program for children and pregnant women. As a result, Vermont has one of the highest rates of coverage for children, teens, and pregnant people in the country.
When the federal health care law, known as the Affordable Care Act (or ACA), was passed in 2010, each state was given the choice to build its own health insurance marketplace, or “exchange,” or to join the federal marketplace. To protect our unique healthcare reforms, Vermont chose to build our own—Vermont Health Connect. That's why we say Vermont Health Connect is “for Vermonters, by Vermonters.”
Vermont Health Connect operates under the Department of Vermont Health Access (DVHA) which is part of Vermont's Agency of Human Services (AHS). Vermont Health Connect handles eligibility for individuals and families, as well as Vermont small businesses. Individuals and families who enroll though Vermont Health Connect can get financial help paying for coverage, or Medicaid, if they qualify.
Small businesses can enroll in group health plans directly with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont and MVP Health Care®. If eligible, they can also get a small business tax credit when they offer insurance to employees. Ask your business’s tax professional for details.
